What the hell? Tom Cruise may have influenced fashion for the first time since Top Gun. Boyfriend jeans crept into Katie Holmes wardrobe, and now they've crept into Lindsay Lohan's wardrobe. Will they start appearing on mere mortals too? Do we have a little bit of a trend on our hands here? And how far will it spread?
A faded pair of
Levi 501s was a requisite for a fashionable cat in the 1990s. That was last millennium. Then we went through the flared hipster; then to the muffin-top, boot cut and finally to the skinny jean.
When I saw Katie Holmes sporting a pair of 501s as she left rehearsals I was immediately appalled. Mainly because she's Tom Cruise's wife. Probably if Agy Deyn was rocking them I'd be all over it. My first thought was "nineties revival, errk!".
Now, however, I am now contradicting my past self, and I'm thinking "Hmmm, these loose jeans are rather flattering to most figures and convey something of a relaxed
elegance."
My reason? Lulu from
Everybody is Ugly wearing hers, my sister wearing hers and the fact that too many people wear skinny jeans when they know they shouldn't. The cut of the 501 is actually very flattering, plus you don't see arse crack when the wearer sits down, nor muffin top.
In fact, I feel the new old 501 ($20 on
ebay)could really work with a cheeky ironic loafer and a summer blouse, not to mention with a little singlet and a bowler hat a la Lulu. Perhaps just avoid wearing them a la Katie Holmes: matchy matchy with your Scientologist husband.
