Gosh it was a massive year in shoes! And by massive I mean wedges were EVERYWHERE. Everywhere. They're on the front of Nicholas' Kirkwood's wondrous creations, they are stars of the Acne line-up. In a not-at-all-seventies way, they snuck in without us looking, making the perfectly average girl into a gigantor. You just better have had strong ankles this year.

My top ten most awesome list is not just a compilation of my favourite shoes, it mainly stars the shoes that were so original and iconic that they were ripped off as quick as you can say Jeffrey Campbell. I give you the Acne wedge, the Burberry and Wang combat boots.

Ankle boots were all over the foot this year. They came at us in metallics, mesh, suede and fabric. Chanel did an absolute ripper, Zanotti's were worn in the Victoria's Secret parade.

In a corker of a multi-trend combo attack, Chloe Sevigny combine the boot with the sandal and the wedge - plus an eighties throwback buckle - to create the most influential shoe of the season. Opening Ceremony just keep winning, don't they?

By September it had cooled down enough up north for the gals at London, Paris and Milan fashion weeks to kick the thigh-high boot trend into force. Down here it won't emerge until winter, and by then, those whom it does not suit will have bought combat ankle boots instead. Possibly even in brown.

A huge top ten most disappointing to every company that skirted copyright laws, or made use of lax legislation, to rip off the original creations pictured in this top ten.
