Paris is so bitterly cold this fashion week, that it's particularly easy to picture yourself in all the fantastic cold weather offerings hurtling down the runways.

As your teeth chatter on the march between shows, 17 layers of Viktor and Rolf's new versatile collection, Jean Paul Gaultier's Inuit hoods, Rykiel's ostrich-feather dresses or Lanvin's huge-shouldered coats seem just the thing for keeping the biting wind at bay.

Milan posits itself as the most important fashion week in the world, but it's these designers at Paris Fashion Week that are the most exciting.

Viktor and Rolf's show was a remarkable piece of shomanship that photos do not do justice. The duo demonstrated the versatility to each piece in the new collection, dressing and undressing models on a revolving circular section of the catwalk.

The last Paris fashion week threw up the huge shoulder trend courtesy of Balmain. No similarly blatant trend has emerged just yet, though three more subtle movements have emerged: space-aged sexy, sixties chic and modern elegance.

The space-aged trend comes in the shape of a zippered and pulled Viktor and Rolf dress, a gold dress or jacket, perhaps from Lanvin, the silver leather pants from Lagerfeld and the stripes and colours of Balenciaga. It's this look that we all thought we'd be wearing come the new millenium, and you can do so, if you can buy into these labels.

Sixties (and gosh when can we please let that lie) was all over the styling and clothing at Rochas, Dior, Lagerfeld and Marant. It's always chic, what with the winged eye make-up and bouffant hair, but I do wonder if designers revert to the era because it is nostalgic, comfortable and easy. Retrogression leaves nothing to inspire future generations, so if you take it on, do it with a modern twist.

As for modern twists, that is what Phoebe Philo in her second collection for Celine, Balenciaga and Dries Van Noten all did a modern type of elegance so well. To the actual clothes that real women wear everyday, she added tweeks and sexiness all with her incredible knowledge of technical design. The giant croc skin bag at Dries is delicious, the silouhette of carrot pant and slightly chubby jacket so flattering. Celine's interesting coats and day dress the perfect tweak on real clothes. Balenciaga, the exact uniform for a new millenium office worker - if you have thousands to drop on outfits.

This last look is the one you can expect will distill down to the high street and chain stores. Think cropped tapered trousers, fitted riding jackets, chunky shoes, lace tops, grown-up volume-shouldered coats and big croc-print bags. Tones will be browns, taupes, khakis and beiges all in the one outfit. Pretty much the outift your Mum always hoped you'd end up in, as a proper young lady, but with a very hot new millenium twist.

Stay tuned for more from Paris including the trade show round up, an interview with an amazing hat designer, the mentalism of Jean-Charles de Castelbajac and of course, full coverage of the Chanel show.
