Just 67 kilometres to the south of Tel Aviv, Israel's party and fashion capital, the Gaza Strip is in turmoil again. The Israeli offensive against Hamas grows more intense while Hamas continues to launch rockets into southern Israel.
67 kms is something like the distance from Melbourne to Rosebud, and less than Sydney to Woollongong. Despite the shelling, the escalating casualties and the humanitarian crisis being so nearby, life, and fashion, goes on in other Israeli cities like Tel Aviv and Haifa.
One of Tel Aviv's street fashion bloggers Yael Sloma from
The Streets Walker says "In Tel Aviv the life goes on, but 20 kilometers from here children don't go to school and parents don't go to their workplaces."
"I don't know how is it to live in the south of Israel, who sufferers from about 30-50 rockets per day these days, but I do can say that from not that far Tel Aviv, we watch in concern at the breaking news from the rest of my country, and from Gaza strip, and hope the bombing in both sides will come to its end in the near future," she adds.
16 days into the current conflict and negotiations are underway for a sustainable
ceasefire, with French president Nicholas Sarkozy weighing in alongside former UK prime minister Tony Blair. Like these two statesmen, Sloma hopes for a ceasfire soon. "I hope that there will be a ceasefire in the next few days, and that the citizens of Israel and Gaza strip will back to their normal life."
