Over the weekend whilst traipsing down the street in Bondi in my trackies, I overheard an over-coiffed girl whimper to her tandoori tanned buddy, “I feel slightly overdressed for Bondi”. You think? She was wearing a Grecian style, floor length, peach coloured chiffon dress with metallic strappy stilettoes. Noooo! At 10am on Hall Street? Hardly.
And this is the quandry. All the while we’re a city of style mavens and fashionheads in the making, but we are either dressed up, or dressed down. We’re either in fashion, or out of fashion. And there seems to be some confusion about what lies in between.
Galleries, cafés, events are all awash with the two separate sub-genres sitting as far from each other as room allows and quite frankly, it seems that never twain shall meet.
It begs the question though, if you’re a high heeler, and let’s face it, some of us kinda have to give them a whirl for our day jobs, what are the alternatives for when the dress code calls for casual?
You’ll be glad to hear that at least one of the world’s favourite foot fanciers has solved the flat shoe dilemma (if you have a spare 800euros under the mattress, that is).
Nicholas Kirkwood has, after 5 years of creating the most talked about high end footwear in fashion circles everywhere, designed a line of flats.
With only 17 pairs per style available, and exclusively sold through Dover Street Market in London, they may not be the easiest shoes to get your hands on, but rest assured, next season they will be available in more than a few stores worldwide.
On a more local note, I’ve compiled a wee list of what I believe to be the most excellent flatties around (as well as a few ambiguous styles that fit somewhere in between).
