Scanning the show images of Berlin Fashion Week, one of the world's more obscure, this collection from Sam Frenzel caught my eye. Berlin's fashion week is not nearly as important to buyers and journalists as Paris or Milan (sorry Berlin) but occasionaly launches an amazing newcomer. Frenzel is that guy.
Last year he won the Designer for Tomorrow award, and you can see why. For autumn/winter 2010 the man delivered not just wild chunky knits, but delicate wafting gowns, balaclavas with a little hole for your top knot and some get-out-of-the-town amazing accessories. The huge chunky pieces - over-sized chain links, huge false gem-shapes in metal and resin, bibs of gold and long, knotted earrings - are right on the money for the coming season.
Every piece on trend for next winter, when futuristic clothes will hopefully take over from the comforting retro gear we've been copping during this recession.
Big things should happen for Freznel. He looks commercial enough to make money, and clever enough to make trends. He may well land himself a show at Paris, where his fellow countryman Wolfgang Joop shows his label Wunderkind. Then we'll have to write this story all over again with another newbie.
