Being a writer and all, I’m going to strike a blow for the written word and give you an exclusively quote-themed Top 3. Here are the – in my humble opinion – Craziest Fashion [Quote] Moments of 2011…

3. The Hon. Daphne Guinness in The New Yorker, 26 September 2011:
“If I eat I can’t work. I’ll eat when I’m dead.”

Work is important. I mean, one’s career should come first so if one can’t work if you eat, there’s certainly something to be said for starving. We all have to make sacrifices, of course. It’s a good point, Daphne. Really good point… So, um, Daphne… what is it exactly you do? Oh that’s right: you’re thin and wear clothes for a living. Totes forgot. Sorry, babes. Forgive me, it’s just that it’s an uncommon profession for someone who’s not a model or an athlete. I mean unless you’re Kate Bosworth, of course. But good luck with that, and I’ll leave you with the words of Catherine Deneuve: “At a certain age, you have to choose between your face and your ass.”

2. Milla Jovovich in The Daily Telegraph, 2 October 2011:
“I've tended to fall in love with the directors rather than the actors. That's because of my mother, too, who told me actors were vain, self-centred, flighty. [Male models are] even worse than actors. I mean seriously: you're going to model for a living? It's embarrassing for a man to model. Because it's not like their career can take them anywhere – except in rare exceptions, like my ex-boyfriend Mario Sorrenti. If I ever had a boy, my one terror would be that he wanted to be an actor or a model.”

I see, because all male models only model for a living and have no other goals or interests in life? And I’m not even going to comment on her shocking double-standard, let alone her blatant female chauvinism. Plus, isn’t it all a bit rich coming from a ‘model/actress’?

1. Hedi Slimane in Women’s Wear Daily, 21 March 2011:
“Nothing looks worse than a dress or a suit on a red carpet. It is an ongoing tragedy of cheap fashion on cheap celebrities, followed by ubercheap comments. I only like designers’ clothes on models. Good models have an inner understanding of the clothes and design.”

Right… because models are notoriously observant and so very dedicated to their work, and all actors live for is that red carpet moment. That’s why they always look so comfortable. Also, the next time I put on one of my collectible pieces from Slimane’s autumn/winter 2003 collection – which is my favourite collection ever made by any designer – I’ll be sure to remember the wise words of its creator. Shucks… if only I had that ‘inner understanding’.

And as a bonus, the award for Gutsiest Fashion Quote of 2011 goes to Azzedine Alaïa for saying this.
