When it comes to Australian television's so called 'night of nights' I'd rather see train wrecks than beaded trains. A so-bad-its-good dress is far more entertaining than the well rehearsed jokes and flat red carpet banter that goes on. I'd rather see Rebbeca Gibney getting it horribly wrong (not just sadly wrong as was the case this year) than hear about how 'Backyard Blitz' is now going to be on every night. I'd like to see one of the kids from 'Home and Away' wear an age-appropriate Australian designer with a bit of attitude. A Romance Was Born, Gail Sorronda or Sass and Bide frock would do the trick nicely, instead of the same pastel pink pageant frocks again and again.
Speaking of Sass and Bide, it was a pleasant surprise to spot designers Heidi Middleton and Sarah Jane Clark on the red carpet, although holy hell are they tanned! When huddled together they looked like a a sparkly version of Uluru – which was surprisingly a highlight of the night.
Sadly this was the first and last we saw of Sass and Bide on the red carpet. There was however a lot of Alex Perry, Rebecca Gilbert and J'A'ton found on the television starlets (do we all have the same stylists ladies?) As usual, shimmery gold, champagne and cream were the colours du jour this year. Kat Stewart's gold frock was far superior to Zoe Ventoura's, and Megan Gale did white better than Erin McNaught, while both looked way better than Sonia Kruger, who by the way needs to stop doing thigh-high splits before we all go blind.
When actresses weren't smiling in shades of champagne and cream they were trying their best to look dramatic in moody blues. Apart from Sarah Murdoch's divine effort, the rest of the actresses came across rather awkward. At the height of awkwardness was Lisa McCune, who tried to look her sexy best in deep blue sequins, but wore minimal makeup and a boring up do resulting in her looking like Maggie Doyle from Blue Heelers - still! You'll never shake it McCune.
Other wonderfully awkward moments were found with Former Miss Australia Laura Dundovic. For people who couldn't quite work out who she was and why she was there, they could at least take a good guess as to who she was dressed as - Pebbles from The Flinstones obviously. Let this be a valuable lesson to all – a Charlie Brown leopard print dress, greasy tan and high pony tail can only result in you being compared to a cartoon character.
Speaking of cartoon characters, Katy Perry was there this year as the token celebrity and her violin print, emerald green puffed sleeve and statement necklace was one of the more interesting outfits on the red carpet.
Although to me the underrated winner of the night was Zoe Tuckwell Smith from 'Winners and Losers'. Not only was her cream and lace dress by Melbourne designer Georgia McCorkill utterly gorgeous and original, but it was made from 'up-cycled' silk georgette amongst other fabric offcuts. Further proof there is room for vintage dresses, normal smiles and natural skin tones at the Logies.
