From December 3rd to 17th, Christie’s will host a major online auction of over 2,000 pieces of jewellery owned by the late Dame Elizabeth Taylor. Good news for rich jewellery enthusiasts – unnerving news for me. Dame Elizabeth has a bit of a special place in my heart (read my tribute to her here, should you want to know exactly how special) and I just hate the thought of her invaluable collection of jewellery being scattered around the world, around the necks and wrists of any blackbird-eyed, nouveau riche hag wealthy enough to outbid the competition.

But moreover, it shocks me that Dame Elizabeth’s children – Liza Todd-Tivey, Maria Burton Carson, and Michael and Christopher Wilding – have decided to put their mother’s jewellery up for auction. Please correct if you know something I don’t know – I’ve googled my eyes out trying to find information about this, but every story I read on it seems to ignore this rather obvious question mark – but isn’t a tad cynical to just sell all your mother’s most precious belongings like that? And so soon after her death.

Anyone familiar with Elizabeth Taylor will know that her jewellery and her animals are what mattered most to her. Her jewellery collection is one of the rarest, most complete collections in the world and includes pieces such as The Krupp Diamond (renamed The Taylor-Burton Diamond) and a brooch that belonged to Wallis, Duchess of Windsor. You’d have thought Dame Elizabeth would have liked to see her collection remain in full, even after she wasn’t here to wear it herself anymore.

Elizabeth Taylor was notoriously one of the richest people in Hollywood. Her art collection – some of which is being sold as well – is worth millions, and her other assets alone are enough to keep a small village in business for a few centuries. Why her children feel a need to sell her jewellery shall remain a mystery – they’re all rather shy and extremely tight-lipped when it comes to talking about their mother – but I can imagine the grand old Dame is none too pleased on her cloud this December.
