It's absolutely freaking freezing right now. We're in the middle of winter, the days are short, the nights are long and I'm running low on whisky and chocolate pudding. Keeping me going through these dark times is the idea that, come summer, I am going to be wearing this top from Something Else.
It is going to work
very nicely with my fractal-mystic vibe I'll be reawakening.
Natalie Wood is the lady behind my winter saviour, so I thought I'd see what she was up to.
Hi Nat! What are you up to?
We just finished designing our winter collection, so I took a break and went looking for love and inspiration in New York.
How is NYC going?
Yeah it's great as always. Beautiful sunny summer days perfect for walking the streets and hanging in the parks. I've seen so much good art these past two weeks, my palms are now itching to get home and start making new things. Saw the Roots live the other night and got to have a bit of a boogy in a few hip hop clubs. Music and art, my two favourite things about travelling. Oh and spending time with friends.
So it's plain that Egypt is an influence for summer. It's an ancient theme, what sparked your interest in it this year?
The Egyptian ideas actually came from this musician
Sun Ra. I watched a documentary on him, he is this incredible space jazz musician from NY in the '70s. He was completely into believing he was from Mars and totally into all the old ancient Egyptian stuff. Within the first few minutes of seeing him and his band, I knew that was our guy for endless inspiration. And the Egyptian iconography worked so perfectly with eveything we were loving.
What was the favourite piece you worked on?
That's hard to say, but I really like working on getting all the artwork in and making it come together as a collection. That's the most exciting part for me.
What piece do you expect will sell the best?
I would say the big tutti kaftan T-shirt (below). It represents everythig of the best to me - oversized, colorful and a tee. Perfection. That I know others will also enjoy.
