In the June issue of
Inc.,
Threadless were dubbed, 'The Most Innovative Small Company in America'. It comes as no surprise to us that this was the case. We love the line, “
Don’t laugh. It makes T-shirts.” Seems that Threadless are the ones laughing. Laughing all the way to the bank...
Here's
the article.T-world paid Jake Nickell (the founder) a personal visit when in Chicago recently. We already knew that they were a successful bunch but we were really impressed with their business balls. A self-confessed college dropout, Nickell is proof that if you have a great idea and the determination to see it through, you don’t need a piece of paper to prove you can succeed. As the article reiterates, Threadless churn out loads of tees, but they do this with no advertising and no retail distribution. Go figure.
Read the cover again. $30 million in sales. And 30% profit. You do the math. What Threadless proves is that there is great power in the art of the T-shirt. And so, if you like them or not, it really doesn’t matter because they deserve true credit for what they have been able to achieve. What they also deserve respect for is being able to remain humble in an industry that is also used to churning out egos.
Whilst in Chicago we also visited the Threadless store, but nothing could match the impact of meeting the man behind the name. There’ll be a feature in the upcoming issue. Next stop - New York. Stay tuned.
T-il next time,
Eddie
