While they happen within a couple of days of each other, the Golden Globes at first glance seems a world apart from the Miss America pageant. The Globes is a celebration of excellence in entertainment, while Miss America isn't even excellently entertaining anymore, but looking at the fashion, they could be the same event.
Sure, there are some standout frocks at the Globes - Olivia Wilde is looking amazing in a giant, glittering Marchesa gown, for example - but for the most part, it's a constant grind of mediocre evening wear.
Long, tight fitted dresses with a few splashes of sparkle are standard at both events. The biggest difference is that while pageant girls often go for glaring white - a sign of innocence that is perhaps a sartorial reassurance that no naked pictures will emerge if that coveted crown is placed upon the wearer's head - on the red carpet champaign and nude tones are a more popular choice. It looks a little classier than the pageantry takes, but when you look at them all together, the starlets and the pageant princesses sure do look similar.
It's such a shame that, with all the options spread out before them, most Hollywood types still opt to wear formulaic long, figure-hugging gowns with a hint of sequin.
There have been a few standout pieces that have broke from the Miss America-style boring ball gown so far, however. Claire Danes' ultra-simple peachy Calvin Klein dress was a stand-out, while Helena Bonhem Carter was on crazy-town form in Vivienne Westwood with round, gothic glasses. As well as nude pinks, sands and champagnes, forrest green is proving to be an unlikely colour hit, with Angelina Jolie, Mila Kunis, Elizabeth Moss and Catherine Zeta Jones all donning the shade.
