What would you wear to a meeting with Anna Wintour?

Imagine this face staring at you from across the desk. Silently judging you.

The other day I was talking to my friend about how it seems like it would be easy to dress as well as Kanye West. The dude hasn't dressed particularly extravagantly since he sported that Celine blouse on stage at Coachella in 2011. These days he works with muted colours and basics, but it all fits him so well. And if you're the kind of guy who lives to be in photos with Anna Wintour, you've gotta know how to dress. But say you're not Kanye West, you're just an aspiring fashionite looking to break into the industry. If you were going into an interview with the Queen of Vogue, what would you wear?

New York Magazine's fashion blog, The Cut, spoke to thirteen different people about what they wore to interviews, and whether they got the job or not. Perhaps unsurprisingly, the woman who spent over $5000 got the job, while the one who wore vintage finds pulled from her wardrobe in Brooklyn did not. But then the woman who wore Docs and another who wore a J.Crew skirt got jobs as well, and another who wore vintage did not. Are we seeing a pattern here yet?

The takeaway seems to be that if you want to work for Wintour, money and pedigree work in your favour, but most of all it's about being current. Anything that looks as old as Anna, in other words, is out.
