For July’s instalment of Velo Chic, Brisbane photographer Brent Kerr took his snapper to the mean streets of his hometown to capture the fine people and bikes there.

Brent found 8 fully custom bikes built from the ground up and 3 older shop bought bikes. Our vote goes to Carly for most stylish bike builder. Yes, she of the billowy cream blouse built that bike.

Brisbane is reputed as the upcoming style capital of Australia, rivalling Melbourne for the title. In truth, Brizzy is much more relaxed. The sun shines brighter, the thong is a year-round footwear solution and flannies, as evidenced here, are de rigueur.

For the rider, North Brisbane is also much hillier than Melbourne. So that makes for limited riding and styling opportunities. That’s no problem for downhill mountain bike champion Chris Kovarik however. Hills, for he, are for thrills.

Also in Melbourne, the 8th Annual Bicycle Film Festival is calling for locally-made films with a bike theme. The deadline for entry is 12th September 2008 and the festival is on from 19th-23rd November 2008.
