Kristen Stewart was sulky in black Chanel, Elizabeth Banks was cheery in feathers and M.I.A. dazzled in a gold at the Metropolitan Museum's Costume Institute gala.

Winners in the frock stakes include Chloe Sevigny in aqua lace Proenza Schouler and Jessica Alba in oyster satin. Losers included Maggie Gyllenhaal, a stranger to worst dressed lists, but nevertheless demoted from fabulousness for a voluminous denim gown.

The gala celebrated the launch of the spring 2010 exhibition organised by The Costume Institute of The Metropolitan Museum of Art. Called  American Woman: Fashioning a National Identity, the exhibit draws pieces from the newly established Brooklyn Museum Costume Collection.
