Naomi Campbell sues “The Daily Telegraph” over defamatory comments

Naomi Campbell recently filed a claim for libel against the Telegraph Media Group, the owners of The Daily Telegraph, over an article that claimed that she was planning...wait for it...an elephant polo tournament in India. The story stated that elephant polo would feature at a party that Campbell was hosting for her partner, Russian billionaire Vladislav Doronin.

Although we find the contents of the article pretty lol-worthy, Campbell’s gripe with the publication is better understood in the context of her work as an animal cruelty campaigner. Following the publication of the story on November 3rd, she was the recipient of letters of complaint (including letters from the Government of India), while protests were also staged outside the party venue.

Campbell’s solicitor, Gideon Benaim, spoke about the claim: “it seems to me that government authorities and animal welfare groups in India were simply reacting to the untrue claims that had been made. The simple truth is that there was no plan for elephant polo. Ms Campbell did not cancel it because it was never going to happen in the first place. We have as yet no idea where the false claims originated from, perhaps The Telegraph will let us know in due course."

This case is the second high profile legal spat for Campbell, who sued the Daily Mirror in 2001 for breach of privacy.
