Manuscript Issue 5 preview
Last night Manuscript magazine celebrated their one year anniversary at an intimate event held at Sydney’s Luxe Studios.
As the magazine’s editor Mitchell Oakley Smith noted in his speech, for a magazine to make it through its first year in the current economic climate is a pretty big blessing, although in the case of Manuscript it is perhaps not so surprising.
Manuscript is a unique proposition in the Australian publishing market. “It makes me wish I was a boy,” one guest at the event confided to me last night. What makes Manuscript work so well is its laser beam focus on Australia’s culture of creativity. The paper has featured a compelling range of cover stars, from the Samuel brothers to Stephan Pavlovic to Lanvin’s menswear designer Lucas Ossendrijver who graced the first first issue. This is combined with a high fashion sensibility for the magazine’s editorial spreads courtesy of Creative Director Jolyon Mason, which is more tongue-in-cheek than camp-in-suits.
Issue five, which came out today features profiles of 14 emerging Australian actors alongside a look at some leading gallery curators, a look at the history of swimwear in Australia and a preview of Dior Homme’s Spring/Summer collection, ahead of the brand’s first store opening in Australia.
This issue also marks the first time Manuscript – which comes out quarterly – will be retailed in major newsagencies. Prior to this issue you could buy the magazine at leading menswear boutiques, book stores and galleries, but now the publication will be far more widely available. This is good news for Australian guys, because at a $5 cover price, it’s well worth a look.
