Combine
Caitlin Shearer - dreamy, whimsical and slightly eerie fashion illustrator and
Karla Spetic - intense, ethereal and delicate fashion designer and you've got a forcefully girlish collection featuring gelato colours and prints worth framing.
The collaboration is inspired by Sophia Coppola's visually dense films, and will soon be available from Sydney's The Corner Store, which is also hosting an exhibition of Shearer's work.
"I had been admiring Karla's previous collections, especially the printed pieces she had released in the past, of houses and roses," said the excited Shearer. "These images had stuck in my head, and so one day I decided to write to Karla, introducing myself and my art, and from there on grew this lovely collaboration."
Shearer, who has also done some illustrations for
Hopeless lingerie and has some more fashion projects in the works, was drawn to Spetic's work by the way the designer mixes elegance, charm and femininity.
"The pieces themselves are so beautifully composed and tailored, and have intricate detailed elements which heighten the splendour of the clothing. I appreciate her eye for beauty and so it was amazing to work with someone as talented as Karla."
Collaborations between corporate giants and hot new artists often seem forced. Mutual admiration meant this one evolved naturally.
"At our first meeting, Karla and I realised we were both Sofia Coppola fans. She is one of my very favourite modern day film makers. All of her films are uniquely Coppola, imbued with such a sense of feminine languor and charm that is unmistakably hers. This unique spirit carries on into her other fashion and photography projects which I truly admire. I think our works have in common this obsession with femininity," she says.
