In the past few weeks we've made much of the kinds of celebrities major European luxury houses choose to represent them, and have despaired at Chanel's rumoured girl of choice, Blake Lively.

Well, now it's been confirmed that she will indeed be a new face for Chanel, but it's not their main fashion, fragrance, or even eyewear she'll be representing. Blake's been picked as the new ambassador of the MADEMOISELLE handbag range. Personally, I think it's kind of perfect. While Lively doesn't have the mystique to sell a fragrance, her healthy, sunny, all American glamour girl thing works very well for youth-targeted luxury handbags.

Indeed, it's the kind of alignment that would even work for her on-screen alter ego Serena.

So far very little information is available, but we do know the campaign has already been shot. The Mademoiselle handbag is also already retailing in some stores, and premiered earlier this year.

In a release this morning, Chanel stated:

Karl Lagerfeld has chosen Blake Lively, a rising star on the American movie scene, as the official face of the "MADEMOISELLE'' handbag line.
Her spontaneity and fresh, youthful image have convinced CHANEL that she is the right person to represent the house and this range of bags.
The launch of the "MADEMOISELLE" campaign, photographed by Karl Lagerfeld, is scheduled for mid-March 2011.
