David Jones held their casting for the Winter 2012 season this morning at Luxe studios, so I headed down to perve on all the models and take photos of them on my phone.

I’ve never seen so many tall skinny people in one place at the same time, and out of the three hundred supreme beings who walked today, only forty will be chosen to represent the brand in their upcoming show. The lovely top model turned designer Gail Elliot and David Jones head stylist Kelvin Harries have the task of editing the list of young hopefuls, here’s a brief rundown of our chat:

LB: What type of look are you going for this year?

Kelvin: We never set out with a particular type that we’re casting for. We just want the absolute best that Australia has to offer. We judge on different criteria but obviously things like body proportion and natural beauty. They have to be sample size and they need to have a kind of charisma where they will connect with the audience because ultimately they are there to sell the clothes.

Gail: For fashion shows I like a strong look. I like long limbs and a line up of girls that are all pretty much the same height. I really look for strong shoulders and a graceful, elegant and confident persona.

LB: What are some things models should take into consideration when attending a large-scale casting like today?

Kelvin: We literally see hundreds of people and each one has about five seconds to sell themselves. It’s important the models come in tight fitting clothing so we can see their body shape and they have to have their high heels on. Their face must be clean and fresh and their hair tied back so we can properly see what they look like. The more information they give us in those five seconds the better.

Gail: I think models should pay more attention to their preparation. Personal grooming is very important, little things like having clean hair make a huge difference and sometimes the younger girls forget that. I like to see how someone uses their whole body. Their hair, their face, their legs. That’s why I sometimes asked for girls to take their hair out of a ponytail, so I can see the whole picture.

So there you have it. Models take note and as for you rest of you enjoy the happy snaps!
