Balenciaga to launch a couture line?

Somewhere amongst the swell of information and statements that followed the official announcement of Alexander Wang’s appointment as creative director at Balenciaga, François-Henri Pinault, CEO of PPR—the conglomerate that owns Balenciaga—voiced some aspirations for the future of the French label that struck us as particularly tantalising.

Speaking of the designer to CBS, Pinault said: "He has a very strong talent not only when it comes to accessible product, but his talent could also be adapted for couture at Balenciaga." The statement immediately sparked rumours that Balenciaga may have a couture line in the works, perhaps as one of the many changes and innovations that Wang’s appointment will inevitably bring.

In related news, last week it was also announced that Wang will direct Balenciaga as well as continuing with his own label. Pinault commented on this decision too, saying: “This is the first time that such a talent started his career with his own brand and then moved to an existing one in a new segment. This has never been done before".

In any case, couture or not, it will be terrifically exciting to see what Wang comes up with for Balenciaga’s next season, and whether his designs will live up to the hype of his appointment.
