Acne has teamed up with Spanish magazine
Candy to launch a small range of shirts targetted at transvestite, transgender, and cross-dressing consumers. The capsule collection is based on the classic western shirt and consists of three androgynous variations of the style, made in both silk crepe and Italian denim.
It may only be a small ‘three shirt collection’ step for the transgendered and transvestite community but the concept in itself is a giant leap for consumers who have until now been ignored by retailers.
Acne's creative director Jonny Johansson and Candy magazine’s editor Luis Venegas teamed up to design the range together with the idea that the collection wouldn’t just be ‘unisex’ but challenge consumers to question whether the shirts were intended for boys or girls.
The choice to centre the designs around the style of a western shirt came from Luis’ love for eighties TV show
Dynasty. Each shirt is named after one of the show’s characters; Alexis – which features a dramatic pussy bow, Krystle – a blouse with big sleeves, and Sammy Jo - a ruffled shirt.
Described as the first ‘Transversal style magazine,’ Candy is dedicated to ‘celebrating transvestism, transexuality, cross dressing and androgyny, in all its manifestations.’ The magazine has only released a fall winter debut issue so far, with a spring summer edition to be launched soon. Despite being only one issue in though, Candy has received attention and adoration from all around the world thanks to its unique and forward-thinking concept and genuinely innovative editiorals. The first issue stars a range of transversal stars along with mainstream names including Rodarte, Tim Walker, Johnny Dep, Boy George, Fran Lebowitz and Terry Richardson.
