Don't take getting a tan so seriously this summer... lighten up.
Almost half of us will develop some kind of skin cancer in our lifetime. Scary statistics, huh?
By-and-large skin cancer is preventable, so to think we can reduce our susceptibility is comforting. That said, taking ourselves out of the “red-zone” means committing to being sun-safe; being responsible, basically, 100% of the time. Not just when it suits us. So start slappin’ it on, ladies… liberally, and without hesitation.
The rule with sunscreen is to use at least a teaspoon on each of your arms and legs, front and back, and at least half a teaspoon on your face. Get in the habit of applying it every morning regardless of the season, and reapplying prior to, and during, prolonged or otherwise unprotected periods of exposure.
Conveniently, there are a number of cosmetics that also contain an SPF. Those with normal skin types have the option of a daily moisturizer such as
Nivea Sun’s Light Feel Daily Face Veil or
Milk Skincare’s Face Moisturiser with sunscreen, where as sensitive skin types may prefer something that is fragrance and preservative free, such as
Natural Instinct Natural Mineral Sunscreen.
Then there's the face sunscreens, with no tints, and no fuss like
Invisible Zinc and
Jan Marini. Both are non-oil-slick face protection, and the zinc delivers incredible protection.
For you make-up wearers out there - yeah, I know, as if you’re going to reapply sunscreen over your painted face – opt for mineral make-up with a built-in sunscreen. Try
Jane Iredale’s Pressed Powder SPF20 remembering to dust it regularly over the course of the day.
Despite the warnings I bet you’re still reluctant to start lathering, right? Even in the wake of premature deaths and aging? Well, here’s a thought. I’m guessing you’ve cast aside chocolate cake (and all other sweet temptations) in a vain attempt to coax your booty into your bikini. If so, why wouldn’t you act sensibly and cast aside your desire to look like one… a chocolate cake that is? Just hear me out. Yes, they’re irresistible, but isn’t a good torte coveted for its soft, sweet centre? Not its surface, which although brown, need I mention, is also dry, cracked and rather unsightly.
