Leland Bobbe's Half Drag Series
Who's saying what
New York photographer Leland Bobbé portrait series Half Drag is an astonishing testament to the powers of cosmetics. The way the series' subjects are able to transform everything from the curvature of their lips and the shape of their noses to the line of their jaws to help alter their appearance and ultimately their gender is amazing.
"With this series my intention is to capture both the male and the alter-ego female side of these subjects in one image. Through the power of hair and makeup these men are able to completely transform themselves and find their female side while simultaneously showing their male side. These are composed in camera and are not two separate images joined together," Bobbé explains to Vogue Italia.
In much the same way Dove's transformation video taught us the power of hair, make-up, lighting and retouching, these portraits reveal a more DIY, and yet simultaneously more extraordinary process of transformation. The photographs feel almost intimate in the way they give the viewer a glimpse at the men that exist behind their performance masks, and, much like drag shows themselves, cause us to question stereotypical ideas of what a man or woman should look like. Also, I think it's time I start using more contouring powder.
