The State of Design festival is wrapping up today, but design lives on at the Melbourne Museum, in the form of
the Bombay Sapphire Design Discovery Award.
Jewellery by young Perth designers Tane Andrews and Kira Goodey is a feature of the exhibition. The range is called
The Collector, and features bees, spiders and flies - insects whom all spend their days collecting. Pieces include clear acrylic fly earrings, metres of silver chain webs and cast silver spider cluster brooches. Clear acrylic bees gather around their hexagonal hives on necklaces and bangles.
The duo did not take out any awards, but this hasn't stopped them from becoming "international" designers. They are now working in London,
developing their own clothing range under the name
Of Cabbages and Kings as well as toiling in big name design studios such as Alexander McQueen's.
The ten finalists on show are: Anthony Dann, Kelly Freeman and Rina Bernabei, Michael Hoppe,
Simone LeAmon, Stefan Lie, Berto Pandolfo, Nick Rennie, Elliat Rich, John Smith and Edward Wong.
The
Tote light by Rina Bernabei and Kelly Freeman won the 2007 Bombay Sapphire Design Discovery Award, receiving $30,000 and a trip to the Milan Furniture Fair for their efforts.
