Grey Gardens is the most bizarre and thrilling exploration fallen big-money fashion you've ever seen and it's on TV tomorrow night. It's 1975, Jackie Onassis' aunt Big Edie (Edith Ewing Bouvier Beale) and daughter little Edie (Edith Bouvier Beale) are living in the faded glory of Grey Gardens. So old-money that they don't know the first thing about taking care of themselves, they live a ramshackle existence of moth-eaten finery, elbow-length gloves, cardigan hats and feral cats.
The combination of high-class poverty has inspired
Marc Jacobs, who referenced these two wild ladies in his Spring '08 ready to wear range. I do not doubt it will inspire you too, if you're not already getting about in old furs, brooches galore and cat stink.
Drew Barrymore is starring in a re-make of the doco due out in November. After watching the original, you will wonder why anyone would think they could do a better job than these locca ladies.
