So we went to the State of Design launch in Melbourne's exhibition building last night. What a well-dressed night. Booze, designheads, designers = a winning combo.

Designboom editor Nate Archer has brought a 40-strong market with him featuring a range of international designers and manufacturers. I bought a black rubber watch for $25. Bargain of the century. It's right, twice a day at 10:07. That's either time to check yourself, before you wreck yourself or make a cup of tea.

I was enticed by the white animal joy - and fruit-headedness - of Haoshi Design Studio's rings and necklaces. Made of white resin, they were tiny affordable bits of minimal animalia.

There is also much tat on sale at the market, so these monochrome delights are real highlights. Beyond the market space, there are loads of other great fashiony pieces and jewellery to buy. The event is intended for trade, but get down there on the public open days to snap up your own little piece of design.

Design Made Trade, Royal Exhibition Building, Carlton Gardens, 18 – 19 July public days – $10 entry, no registration required.
