Designing the identity for BECCA cosmetics straight out of college is some crash course in how to build an international brand. Here Australian Art Director/Designer Ben Duncalf gives us an insight into the tricks of the trade and what it takes to be at the top of your game.

Describe your current position.

I'm the Art Director of VITA magazine.

What prompted you to become a designer?

I was completing a BA in Social Sciences, and struggling with the less-than- exciting employment opportunities on offer, when I met a budding fashion designer. It was he who opened my eyes to the world of Art Direction and Graphics.

What inspires you now?

“Alarming” colour combinations, different textures and patterns, and the belief that everyone should feel good, laugh a lot and be happy.

Do you have a signature style?

I’m told I do. To me the collaborative element of what I do means that there will always be more than just my creative fingerprint left on the work.

What are the perks and pitfalls of your job?

Perks: working with talented people in a variety of capacities and environments, and being able to express myself at work. Pitfalls: dealing with deadlines, budgets and egos.

Are there any misconceptions about your job?

That it's easy. It's not - it can get really stressful, and you’re forever spending your free time thinking about, and researching work.

What advice can you offer young, aspiring designers keen to break into the fashion industry?

Do the mandatory courses, be an avid reader of magazines, travel, listen to people's experiences, and if you can, find a mentor.
