The west coast girl’s fledgling label is becoming a must own brand faster than you can say ‘gimme some o’dat suga’.
Perth based Carly Hunter is getting stronger every season. Her work is illuminating, thought provoking and pervasive; an unavoidable beacon on stuffed racks that speaks volumes of styles often botched hard/soft dichotomy. The young designer’s deft performance has left my tummy rumbling over the past few seasons, eager to gorge myself on more of her canny craftsmanship. Luckily for me - and now for you too - Carly is giving us a sneak peek at what’s in store from the Hunter vault for AW10.
For the first time Carly Hunter is branching out into unisex pieces. In this ball park it’s anyone’s game, as wide cut printed tees and asymmetric overcoats take the field. With her signature sharp tailoring meets soft folded drapery approach, Carly’s collection continues in the vein of her modern romance.
Working with a muted palette and a range of soft and heavy textures, Carly’s AW10 collection is hauntingly desirable. While draped dresses hint at the shapely female form, chain embellishments give otherwise whimsical layers a hard edge that bridges the gap between the girlie innocence of daisy chains and the grown-up elegance of city concrete.
And finally, the most unmissable characteristic bestowed by Carly Hunter on her collections season after season? Her use of stark white in contrast with her often muted palette, a sharp and decisive punch in the gut that reminds you this is a woman on a mission. There’s something about that dash of clean white that crops up again and again in Carly’s work; it comes crashing through the dulcet tonal blacks and greys to remind us of whatever came before the place where we are now. White is the bottom line in Carly Hunter’s work, the awesome purity of simple style.
