Few people can say they chose to get a clearer understanding of their profession by first assuming other roles within the industry - Jordan Graham was one such individual. Before securing a place on fashion’s list of “ones to watch”, he was a visual merchandiser for Diesel in London, a bookings agent and an on-set producer for the likes of UK Vogue. Here Australian photographer and lecturer Jordan Graham gives us an insight into the tricks of the trade and what it takes to reach the top of your game.
Describe your current job.
I’m a photographer.
Whom or what prompted you to become a photographer?
My paternal grandmother was an avid photographer; it was her visual diary that inspired me to take pictures.
What inspires you now?
People; on the street; on the bus - everywhere. Music videos, youtube and film – most recently An American in Paris, Black Narcissus, Boy With A Coin and Iron and Wine.
Do you have a signature style?
I would say that my work is atmospheric and narrative-driven, and I like to incorporate elements of movement and energy.
What are the perks and pitfalls of your job?
Perks: having the opportunity to express my ideas and document life, travel, working with crazy, creative types, and being surrounded by beautiful people and things. Pitfalls: dealing with the sporadic nature of freelance work.
Are there any misconceptions about your job?
People often mistake photography for a self-indulgent pastime - a hobby. In reality it’s much more complicated; it involves having some knowledge of science, mathematics, economics and diplomacy.
What advice can you offer aspiring photographers keen to break into the fashion industry?
Be committed; focus on your own goals and objectives – be inspired not swayed by the style of others – and love what you're doing.
