Downton Abbey loses Cousin Matthew

Downton Abbey tragics everywhere will be devastated to learn that Dan Stevens, the pristine human specimen who plays Cousin Matthew in the early 1900s costume drama, has plans to kiss the Julian Fellowes' Yorkshire country series goodbye.

Over the weekend a fourth season of Downton was confirmed by ITV, but Mr Matthew Crawley won’t be joining his fellow cast mates for the fourth season’s entirety, apparently set to only appear in the upcoming season’s first episode (thus setting up the season’s driving plotline—presumably Mary’s eternal search for an noble baby daddy) and the yet-to-air 2012 Christmas special.

ITV hasn’t confirmed the departure yet, but “a production source told the Sunday Express of the actor's departure” stating “Dan Stevens isn't returning to the series.” Ouch!

This news comes off the back of Jessica Brown Findlay (aka the rebellious mixing-with-the-help Lady Sybil) leaving the show earlier this year to pursue a Hollywood career.

Watch this space for the impending cast injections.
