What is it that makes Ricky Gervais one of the funniest and most influential comedians in existence? He clearly didn’t invent cringe worthy humour and self deprecation has been a commonly used tool for comedians the world over, yet with one simple half-hour sitcom he put all of those who came before him to shame.

With humour based around brutal honesty and arrogance, hiding crippling self doubt, he has earned a special place in the hearts of comedy lovers everywhere. It all began when together with Stephen Merchant, they unleashed David Brent and The Office upon the world of television comedy. Many years have passed since that day and thanks to international success and recognition Gervais has spread his comedic wings in many different projects including Extras, Ghost Town, The Simpsons, the Flanimals book, several stand up tours and of course The Ricky Gervais Show podcast.

With his directorial debut The Invention of Lying soon to grace our cinema screens we have decided to look back at our top ten favourite Ricky Gervais moments. These clips need no introduction and are a prime example of the brilliance of the man. Everyone has a favourite clip so we sincerely welcome your contribution to this list in the comments section.
