It’s very hard to please everybody when making a film. I’m sure there are lion aficionados out there who found The Lion King offensive for its inaccurate representation of the animal kingdom. Yet every so often films are released of such sacrilegious and moral disregard that they create a cyclone of public outrage that usually becomes more interesting than the film itself.

As social values change so does our tolerance of what can be represented on celluloid as entertainment. While a woman’s bare knee would have caused public outrage in the 1920s, one can only imagine what would have happened if Bruno was released during that period.

Comedy is usually well adept at challenging social values but for every instance where a joke was seen as deliciously satirical, a career was destroyed at the cries of the material going too far ... just ask the Chaser boys.

We have compiled the ten most offensive movies of all time. We looked back at those films that chose to take on those sacred and taboo topics and with very little regard for public opinion and their own personal safety made a film about it. Those who are easily offended turn away now, it’s going to get rough.

10. The Last Temptation of Christ (1988)

Scorsese made more than a few enemies with this one. Of particular outrage was the sexy dream sequence of a certain Messiah getting his groove on.

9. Star Wars Episode I (1999)

An insult to Star Wars fans and sentient beings everywhere. In what is surely evidence of Karma, here’s how Jake “Anakin/ Darth Vader” Lloyd is doing after all these years.

8. Tropic Thunder (2008)
Ben Stiller's floral terminology in describing the disabled offended more than a few movie goers. Strangely enough the actor donned ‘blackface’ was nominated for an Oscar.

7. Cruising (1980)
Homophobia and bad acting lead to Pacino’s darkest movie moment.

6. The Passion of the Christ (2004)

The anti-Semitic undertone in this film was enough to outrage members of the Jewish community the world over.

5. Kids (1995)
The world clearly wasn’t ready for a film about teenage sex and drug use.

4. Team America (2004)
If you ask me Matt Damon deserved everything he got.

3. Pink Flamingos (1972)
It’s the transvestite poop eating that offended most people.

2. Borat (2006)
Does anyone come off well in this film?

1. Life of Brian (1979)
If there’s anything to be learnt it’s that people don’t take kindly to parodies of their adored religious figures.
