Fictional realities have allowed Hollywood the freedom to explore drug use without the fear of censorship or moral outrage at the hands of upset viewers. Simply by substituting the name of the illicit substance and elaborating on the symptoms, filmmakers have been able to explore the dominant drug culture without explicitly condoning its consumption.

When the creative juices are flowing screenwriters have both enticed and repelled us with fictional drugs of such cunning ingenuity you’d be forgiven to ponder, and in many cases wish for, their existence. Whether it is Nuke, Substance D, Slurm, Gleemonex, Goofballs or even more recently Pineapple Express they seem to be the cause and solution for all of life’s problems within their fictional existence.   

For your unbridled enjoyment we have compiled our top ten list of fictional movie and TV drugs. We present this list as a public health message to allow you to distinguish between reality and fiction and in turn save you from any potential embarrassment at the hand of your neighbourhood drug dealer.

10. Pineapple Express from Pineapple Express
The rare strain of marijuana that gets its name from a Hawaiian wind current proved to be well worth the murder and mayhem that ensued after its consumption.



9. Super-Slurm from Futurama
While innocently sold as a soft drink, the super concentrated version proved to be a highly addictive green worm secretion that looked delicious.  



8. Bliss from Red Dwarf
While the consumption will make the user believe they are an omnipotent deity for up to 15 minutes the corresponding 25 years of depression might make you think twice.



7. Spice Melange from Dune
While your eyes will turn blue on the plus side you’ll be able to live longer and see safe paths through space-time making interstellar travel possible. Win/win I say.
 


6. Nuke from Robocop 2
While it clearly relaxes the user the immediate addiction might not attract too many takers.



5. Neuroin from Minority Report
Any drug that makes Tom Cruise a palatable screen presence is alright by me.



4. U4EA from Beverly Hills 90210
Sure it looked like fun but thanks to this evil drug Brandon Walsh has his car stripped for parts.



3. Substance D from A Scanner Darkly
Phillip K Dick loved his fictional drugs.



2. Gleemonex from Brain Candy
The ultimate anti-depressant cures depression outright by sending individuals into a state of absolute comatose happiness.  Highly recommended movie.



1. Ephemerol from Scanners
Initially a morning sickness pill, users found that their children developed the ability to read people’s minds and occasionally blow people’s heads off. Not exactly a party drug but definitely has a plus side. Warning: it will get messy.
