We all know that no matter what progress we make as a species, humanity will forever be divided into two categories: cat people and dog people. The impassioned arguments have destroyed many a friendship as the world debates which animal is most worthy of attention.
I have a theory that the film and television industry is secretly intent on turning viewers into dog lovers as they show nothing but contempt for felines. As evidence I simply ask you, dear reader, to name five fictional canines and attempt to complete the same task for cats.
Sure we’ve had the likes of Garfield, but he is merely the exception to the rule as dogs are consistently portrayed as the less diabolical of the two. Even the dear Simpsons, who are the proud owners of both Santa’s Little Helper and Snowball I-III, seem to prefer the latter, as Homer once wisely observed, “pat the cat?...what’s the point?”
In line with Mr. Simpson’s sentiment we have decided to honour those fictional dogs that have put our own pets to shame. Whether it be saving lives or cracking jokes they embody the epitome of man’s best friend.
10. LassieWhile not as popular as he once was, Lassie’s heroism must be celebrated as he was always willing to rescue the ever clumsy Timmy.
9. TotoThe true star of the
Wizard of Oz. If it wasn’t for his courage, Dorothy and co. would still believe in the smoke and mirrors illusions behind the land of Oz’s head of state.
8. Odie Garfield’s better half has endeared himself in the hearts of many for portraying dogs as the loyal, kind and somewhat vacant animals that they are.
7. EddieFrasier’s resident dog proved to be highly entertaining, sometimes even more so than his human counterparts.
6. BenjiAny child of the '80s would have fond memories of the problem solving mutt thanks to a series of film and television shows. Despite his small size, bank robbers and cougars were no match for this shaggy haired canine.
5. GromitGromit’s talent lies in always being one step ahead of his absent minded owner. The sheer patience shown at the stupidity Wallace displays has made Gromit a hero in our hearts.
4. Scooby Doo Everyone’s favourite crime solving dog, speech impediment and all.
3. BouncerThe quintessential Australian dog proved to be more memorable than many of his human co-stars.
2. Snoopy I think deep down inside we’ve all wished our beloved pets were as smart and as talented on the dance floor as Charlie Brown’s best friend.
1. Brian Griffin The coolest dog ever.
