BEYOND THE VALLEY OF THE DOLLS (1970)
Directed by Russ Meyer
20th Century Fox.
Beyond the Valley of the Dolls was a modern day fable in its time, detailing the outrageous pitfalls of Los Angeles in its wild halcyon days. The film was intended as a sequel to Valley of the Dolls (1967), but instead became a hilarious pastiche of the original.
All-girl band, The Kelly Affair, comprised of Kelly McNamara, Casey Anderson and Petronella Danforth arrive in L.A. with their naive manager Harris Allsworth, who is also Kelly’s boyfriend.
Kelly locates her wealthy Aunt, Susan Lake, who gives over a third of her fortune to her. That night The Kelly Affair play at an exclusive party hosted by the very dandy Ronnie “Z-Man” Barzell, whose character was based on real-life music producer Phil Spector.
Enter Lance Rocke, the gigolo with bedroom eyes who is after Kelly’s money. Cue infamous porn star, Ashley St Ives, a ravenous creature set on sinking her teeth into the lost-lamb features of Harris Allsworth, who is now hooked on "downers’" after Z-Man snatches Kelly from him.
With all the characters now strapped in, you cannot take your eyes off these fantastically damaged and beautiful creatures. It’s like having a fly-on-the-windshield view to a slow-motion car wreck as it hits spins out of control, heading for a fatal impact with an oncoming petrol tanker.
Undeniably brilliant.
