THE GIRL ON THE BRIDGE (La Fille Sur Le Pont) 1999
Director: Patrice Leconte
Paramount ClassicAdele emerges serenely from the expensive beauty salon in Monaco and for Gabor, this is the moment of truth. His heart nearly stops beating inside his chest upon seeing this vision of magnificence. She was a diamond-in-the-rough and Gabor (Daniel Auteuil) had used all of the money he had schemed from wealthy hotel patrons to transform Adele (Vanessa Paradis), from a tragic suicidal girl into a stunning woman that people would be horrified to see faced with death.
Just a few days earlier, Gabor rescued Adele after she had jumped from a bridge into the river Seine on a cold Parisian night. To stave Adele from her wish for death, Gabor offers to use her as the "target girl" in his knife-throwing act.
The unlikely pair travel all over Europe to try and resurrect Gabor’s once famous name and in the process they endure countless highs and lows which serve to strip them bare of any hidden agendas and subterfuge.
Full of distinctly French observations on life, love and regret,
The Girl On The Bridge is a darkly humorous love story, which solidifies the notion that the French are the most incurable romantics on the face of the earth.
Switch on the telly, bust open a packet of Tim-Tams and settle in for the night.
