You know you've really made it in Hollywood if your photo is snapped by Annie Leibovitz.

Some of the most iconic celebrity images from the last few decades - Whoopi Goldberg in a bath of milk, Demi Moore nude and pregnant, Bruce Springsteen on the cover of Born in the USA - have been the result of Leibovitz's keen eye and camera shutter.

Her stunning photography has seen her work for some of the world's finest magazines and papers - after returning from a stint in a kibbutz in Israel, Leibovitz kicked off her career in 1970 at the recently launched Rolling Stone magazine. Since 1983, she has worked as a featured portrait photographer for Vanity Fair.

She also gets paid the big bucks for advertising campaigns with the likes of Disney and Louis Vuitton.

In April this year, Leibovitz had a taste of controversy when 15-year-old Miley Cyrus posed topless for a Leibovitz shoot for Vanity Fair. The resulting photos show Cyrus without a top, her bare back exposed but her front covered with a bedsheet. The image caused an outcry from some members of the public, and a spokesperson for Disney described it as "a situation [that] was created to deliberately manipulate a 15-year-old in order to sell magazines."

Leibovitz responded by saying: "I'm sorry that my portrait of Miley has been misinterpreted. The photograph is a simple, classic portrait, shot with very little makeup, and I think it is very beautiful."

So there.

You can check out more of her excellent work on the Rolling Stone and Vanity Fair websites. You can also scroll through our collection of her work in the image gallery above.

SimoneMitchell - There are many things I enjoy.

I like pictures of pets in costumes, Youtube videos of people hurting themselves and films that distract me for days on end.

I'm also partial to the odd liturgical dance performance, watching episodes of Deadwood in bed and reading a great piece of writing that makes my heart sing.

My love for all these things has landed me the gig of Entertainment Editor here at The Vine.

So in the words of Robbie Williams, sit back and "Let me entertain you".

*punches self in head* Hold my calls. This is aw...
