Walt Disney Pictures has released the first promotional photos from Tim Burton’s 3D version of
Alice in Wonderland.
In the image gallery above you can see
Johnny Depp as the Mad Hatter,
Helena Bonham Carter as The Red Queen,
Anne Hathaway as The White Queen, Canberra girl
Mia Wasikowska as Alice and
Little Britain's
Matt Lucas as Tweedledum and Tweedledee. You can also see some concept art from the film, which shows that it's going to have that wonderfully dark Tim Burton edge to it.
USA Today (where the photos premiered) concurs, saying
"the film has the usual Burton-esque ghoulishness (Helena Bonham Carter's
Red Queen, whose favorite retort is "Off with their heads," has a moat
filled with bobbing noggins), but producer Richard Zanuck assures most kids can handle
it. "The book itself is pretty dark," he notes. "This is for little
people and people who read it when they were little 50 years ago."
The website also states that the film will be like a sequel to Lewis Carrol's original tale:
The traditional tale has been freshened with a blast of girl power, courtesy of writer Linda Woolverton (Beauty and the Beast).
Alice, 17, attends a party at a Victorian estate only to find she is
about to be proposed to in front of hundreds of snooty society types.
Off she runs, following a white rabbit into a hole and ending up in
Wonderland, a place she visited 10 years before yet doesn't remember.
The article also reveals that The White Queen (Hathaway) is "beautiful but eccentric, and floats around instead
of walking", and that Depp employs an accent for the Hatter that
producer Zanuck describes as “indescribable”.
Head over to
this section of USA Today and you can explore Burton's concept art in some new-fandangled interactive manner. But don't move around the scenes too quickly - it will make you feel seasick.
