'Total Recall' reboot with Colin Farrell, Kate Beckinsale gets a trailer

'Total Recall' reboot with Colin Farrell, Kate Beckinsale gets a trailer

Who's saying what

Very true.

Marcus
It hasn't aged spectacularly but 1990s Total Recall remains a beloved benchmark for sci-fi (or just Schwarzenegger) geeks. So it's with some sweat-palmed trepidation today, that the trailer for the reboot surfaces online.

Starring Colin Farrel, Kate Beckinsale and Jessica Biel, the update shifts the setting from Mars to Earth (boring) and swops the outrageous, innately camp style of Schwarzenegger and Co. for the gritty, slo-mo dramatic HD tropes of post-Dark Knight lore. Which—out of the hands of Christopher Nolan (or the Wachowskis, even)— is getting a bit tiresome, we must say.

Look:

Here's the synopsis for the new:

Total Recall is an action thriller about reality and memory, inspired anew by the famous short story "We Can Remember It For You Wholesale" by Philip K. Dick. Welcome to Rekall, the company that can turn your dreams into real memories. For a factory worker named Douglas Quaid (Colin Farrell), even though he's got a beautiful wife (Kate Beckinsale) who he loves, the mind-trip sounds like the perfect vacation from his frustrating life - real memories of life as a super-spy might be just what he needs. But when the procedure goes horribly wrong, Quaid becomes a hunted man. Finding himself on the run from the police - controlled by Chancellor Cohaagen (Bryan Cranston), the leader of the free world - Quaid teams up with a rebel fighter (Jessica Biel) to find the head of the underground resistance (Bill Nighy) and stop Cohaagen. The line between fantasy and reality gets blurred and the fate of his world hangs in the balance as Quaid discovers his true identity, his true love, and his true fate.

Total Recall is in Cinemas September 6th. At least one thing that's clear from the reboot (or any other film, ever): no DVD commentary will be as good as the original:

Ah, everyone knows that the best DVD commentary is Arnie and John Milius' effort for Conan the Barbarian.

I couldn't be more disapponted even if you told me that Tom Cruise is going to play Jack Reacher. I flippin love Total Recall, but what the hell is this?

Total Recall is one of my all time faves. But you gotta realise that TR was a very liberal adaptation of the Phillip K Dick story 'We Can Remember It For You Wholesale'... If the original source is a book, not a film, then IMHO all bets are off. I think this actually looks pretty damn good... And I can't stand Colin Farrell.

Meh...it looks ok, but then all Len Wiseman (Underworld) films look *ok* at the trailer phase. He has no distinctive style, and this will be another average, modern, run-of-the-mill futureworld actioner. Reckon we'll be talking about it in 2034, like we're still talking about the 1990 version now? Nope. And that's because Paul Verhoeven is a great director, whose cartoonish, grotesque, hyper-violent style had huge cultural impact. The people rehashing two of his best (Robocop and Total Recall) are about to embarrass themselves.
