See the Sydney New Year's Eve 2013 fireworks from all angles
Like political debates and Anish Kapoor’s ‘Memory’ , it’s impossible to see fireworks from all angles at once. On New Year’s Eve, watching the 9pm fireworks from the Opera House Kitchen, embedded in the middle of the explosions, then seeing the midnight display at a distance from Point Piper offered two completely different experiences.
One was exhillirating but frustrating; a source of panoramic whiplash. When the colours are falling all around you, it is difficult to decide where to look. Conversely, watching from afar can feel a little disociated, like the fireworks aren’t happening at all, even though you can see almost everything at once.
Fortunately, we live in the age of easy imagery, and a long gawk at Instagram on New Years Day reveals that the Sydney Harbour fireworks looked impressive from wherever you watched them, but also rather different depending on your location.
