Here's what's up: Maria Yeater has had a baby boy. She named him Tristyn, which is fun, and she claims that the father is tween sensation Justin Bieber. She claims to have had unprotected sex (that lasted 30 seconds) with him backstage in a bathroom, while he was on tour. His management team have denied the claims as "malicious, defamatory, and demonstrably false", she's remained adamant and is talking to TMZ and Ryan Seacrest about it, and millions of Beliebers have taken to Twitter to spout hate-filled rhetoric. It was hard enough for them to come to terms with Selena, but this bitch too? Nuh uh.
Since the paternity lawsuit was filed two days ago, I've read many (too many) tweets relating to Maria Yeater from some of Justin Bieber's 14 million followers and I have learned a thing or two. Mostly that they are a fierce and fiercely loyal bunch, who are not at all adverse to violent threats in order to silence the baby mama dramas of their idol. Also, there are A LOT of Twitter handles out there relating to the Biebs. A lot.
Not one Belieber, it seems, has stopped shouting "
GRRR FUCK YOU SLUT! DIE DIE DIE!" long enough to even consider whether this may be true. And it may not be, but the point is we don't know!
And so my main problem with this (although I will concede that there are many) is: where is the sisterhood in all this? If Maria isn't telling the truth, that's a dangerous thing because it paves the way for every other woman to be labelled a liar in the future, which is really not cool. And if it is true, and Biebs really did tell her that he was going to "fuck the shit" out of her in a less than romantic bathroom setting when he was 16, then that's really not great either, you guys, and maybe we should just chill with all the slut-shaming until we really know what's up.
Bieber has responded with, "Im going to ignore the rumors...and focus on what is real. an opportunity to help by doing what i love. Judge me on the music! Love y'all!" and many have chosen to do just that, because he's got such a pretty face, but it mostly just reminds me of that time we let Chris Brown sing at the MTV VMAs and just chose to forget that he assaulted Rihanna a year earlier, because it's all about the music!!1!
[End rant]
To finish on a lighter note, Jimmy Fallon has spoofed the whole thing with a performance of '(It’s Not My) Baby' on his show
Late Night, feat. Black Thought of The Roots.
And Biebs rap alter ego Shawty Mane has dropped his first "It's not mine" line in this suitably impressive rap over Kanye and Jay-Z's 'Otis'.
