Consider your time travel options. You could hitch a ride in a souped-up Delorean, squeeze into a public telephone box or steer your starship into the event horizon of a black hole. But for absolute comfort it would probably be hard to beat a Hot Tub Time Machine.
Hot Tub Time Machine is the refreshingly straightforward title of a comedy set to surface early next year. Judging by what little has been divulged of the story and the new trailer which premiered recently at Comic-Con, it’s probably not going to be a groovy lesson in world history or be overly concerned with space-time paradoxes.
The movie is about a bunch of friends who revisit one of their old hangouts – a jacuzzi at a ski resort – and find themselves transported back to 1986. It’s difficult to think of a more unlikely foursome to be sharing the tub:
Craig Robinson (part of the Apatow extended family, from
Knocked Up and
Pineapple Express),
Clark Duke (the genuine new talent from last year’s forgettable road trip flick
Sex Drive, the creators of which were originally attached to direct this movie),
Rob Corddry (the funny one from
Harold & Kumar Escape From Guantanamo Bay i.e. neither Harold nor Kumar) and…
John Cusack?
That’s right, Cusack will be taking another rare dip into the bubbling broth of adult comedy – and will be producing, what’s more. Only time will tell if Cusack is able to hold his own with the more seasoned comedic performers in the tub – because the new red band trailer doesn’t really give any clue.
Also of note,
Crispin Glover (who we of course remember was also in that film with the Delorean) will also be making an appearance, along with some 1980s comedy royalty in the form of
Chevy Chase, apparently playing a repairman who can help the guys make the return trip from the past.
The script was penned by a relative unknown, Jason Heald, who is probably right when he says that he deserves some sort of award, or a free sandwich, for getting a film called ‘Hot Tub Time Machine’ green-lit in the first place. Directing is Steve Pink, whose only other directorial credit was the occasionally funny Justin Long comedy
Accepted, which also featured Jonah Hill in a sperm outfit. He also wrote the screenplays for
Grosse Point Blank and
High Fidelity (the Cusack connection) and is apparently still likely to be the director of the much-awaited new
Fletch movie (the Chevy Chase connection).
