Last week we reported the news that
Hollywood has decided to reboot Beetlejuice and before I could even begin to build a bridge and get over it, a
Point Break remake has been announced. Is nothing sacred, Hollywood?!
Alcon Entertainment, whose next release is a 3D family film starring Morgan Freeman, Harry Connick Jr. and Ashley Judd called
Dolphin Tale, have acquired the rights to the 1991 film/adrenaline ride that starred Keanu Reeves and Patrick Swayze (who is probably rolling in his grave right about now). Alcon have also secured the television and gaming rights.
According to the press release, "The new version is set in the world of international extreme sports, and like the original involves an undercover FBI agent infiltrating a criminal ring, but plot points beyond that have not been revealed by the filmmakers."
Yikes.
To make matters more terrifying, Michael DeLuca who is one of the producers has said, "
Point Break wasn't just a film, it was a Zen meditation on testosterone fueled action and manhood in the late 20th century and we hope to create the same!"
Kurt Wimmer who penned
Salt,
The Thomas Crown Affair and the upcoming
Total Recall has written the screenplay and according to Alcon co-founders, Andrew Kosove and Broderick Johnson, "Kurt’s take infuses the story and characters with new twists and settings."
There you have it, folks. And on the film's 20th anniversary and everything. No word yet on whether Keanu will return as Johnny Utah, but it has become apparent that
he is immortal, so... perhaps?
