Courtney Love tells Lana Del Rey to think of her vagina next time she sings 'Heart Shaped Box'
Who's saying what
If Lana Del Rey didn’t kill Nirvana’s ‘Heart Shaped Box’ for you during her respective Sydney and Splendour shows last week, don’t worry, Courtney Love has the ruining covered.
The ever-polarising Del Rey replaced Cobain’s gritty ’93 In Utero track for a predictably daintier version and, after discovering the cover, Courtney Love took to twitter to school the Summertime Sadness singer on the true meaning of the hit.
“You do know the song is about my Vagina right? Throw down your umbilical noose so i can climb right back, umm…
“On top of which some of the lyrics about my vagina I contributed.
“So umm next time you sing it, think about my vagina will you? lol xc”
The tweets have since been deleted, and, unsurprisingly, Del Rey has not responded to the latest meaning attached to Cobain’s “meat eating orchids”.
The glamour kitsch icon though does have a long history of waxing lyrical about her love for the Seattle grunge band, specifically Kurt Cobain and the impact ‘Heart Shaped Box’ had on her growing up: “When I was 11, I saw Kurt Cobain singing 'Heart-Shaped Box' on MTV and it really stopped me dead in my tracks. I thought he was the most beautiful person I had ever seen. Even at a young age, I really related to his sadness.” Textbook Del Rey.
