After day three of Comic-Con, one of the movies we're most excited about is the new James Gunn film
Super. And strangely enough, it doesn't even have a distributor behind it yet.
Gunn (who directed the 2002 horror/comedy
Slither) bought the independent film to Hall H at the convention centre in the hope of creating some buzz and attracting a distributor. If the enthusiasm of the punters in the 6000 seat hall was anything to go by, this film could be one of the biggest surprise hits of next year.
Super tells the story of Frank D'Arbo (Rainn Wilson, aka Dwight from the US version of
The Office) a relatively normal chap who hits the matrimonial jackpot and gets hitched to the lovely Sarah (Liv Tyler).
But Sarah falls under the influence of a drug dealer Jacques (Kevin Bacon) and Frank's happy existence starts a downward spiral. The anger and frustration builds in Frank, until he creates an alter ego, Crimson Bolt - a superhero with the best intentions.
Along the way Frank teams up with teen sociopath Libby, who becomes his sidekick Boltie.
It becomes immediately clear that the film has some roaring similarities to
Kick-Ass (which coincidentally was showing at Comic-Con this time last year). But from the looks of the for-Comic-Con-only trailer that they showed, this could actually be even better. It looks incredibly dirty, violent, funny and strangely poignant all at the same time.
The cast seemed particularly passionate about this film during the panel (as you'll see in the footage below). It was also nice to learn that people like Ellen Page and Liv Tyler are still keen to work on smaller projects that they love, rather than opting for the big mega studio pay cheque all the time.
Here's James Gunn (and some of the cast) speaking about it at the convention (via Screen Crave):
