Star Trek to screen in front of Hobbit
The first nine minutes of JJ Abrams’ second, highly anticipated Star Trek movie, Star Trek: Into Darkness will be screening at all IMAX sessions of The Hobbit. This means fans of the franchise will get to see a little chunk of it months in advance of the film's US summer release date.
The first image from the film, which you can see alongside this post, was released yesterday.
Although you can’t quite tell it from the poster, which could feature Kirk, Spock or a mysterious villain (my money’s on Spock) the official synopsis reads as follows:
When the crew of the Enterprise is called back home, they find an unstoppable force of terror from within their own organization has detonated the fleet and everything it stands for, leaving our world in a state of crisis. With a personal score to settle, Captain Kirk leads a manhunt to a war-zone world to capture a one man weapon of mass destruction. As our heroes are propelled into an epic chess game of life and death, love will be challenged, friendships will be torn apart, and sacrifices must be made for the only family Kirk has left: his crew.
Using IMAX sessions of The Hobbit to air the longer tease for the film is a pretty genius idea on Paramount’s part, given the film, like The Hobbit, uses cutting edge camera technology and is equally appealing to huge nerds.
Of the movie, IMAX Chairman Greg Foster said “Our longtime partners J.J. Abrams, Bryan Burk and the Bad Robot team have really hit it out of the park – the footage is absolutely incredible. Their use of the IMAX® Camera and canvas is sure to impress current and future Star Trek fans alike, and we’re thrilled to once again work with our friends at Paramount Pictures to offer this extended ‘first look’ at this highly anticipated summer blockbuster.”
Unfortunately there’s no word yet as to whether the gimp from American Horror Story will make a special appearance as Zachary Quinto’s new love interest.
