There is little more satisfying than a simple idea perfectly executed. Humpday is just that – a modest concept so well delivered that you walk out of the cinema feeling like you’ve eaten the best fucking steak and chips of your lifetime.

While it looks like a kooky bromance about two old college friends (Ben Duplass and Andrew Leonard) that get smashed and agree to make a sex tape for ‘art’, the iceberg below is more complicated (and hilarious). Humpday pokes fun at the delicate male ego without being smug or righteous. In fact, it’s charming in its dissection of ‘man love’ and the changing face of male bonds. In a memorable scene Duplass and Leonard are shirtless and preparing for a fate worse than death (straight-man-on-straight-man bum sex) when they decide that a topless hug might be a good entry point to sex.  What follows is a string of one-liners so effortless and magical that you never want the scene to end (example: ‘that was fine – no big deal. It’s like we ran into each other at the pool and just gave each other an extended hug’).

What makes Humpday a stand out are the performances by the two leading men, Duplass and Leonard. Let’s hope we get to see them on screen again soon.

Humpday is screening at the Melbourne International Film Festval on Friday, August 7, 7pm at Greater Union. For tickets and more info head to the MIFF website.
