Baz Lurhmann’s ‘The Great Gatsby’ set to hit Aussie theatres in May

Baz Lurhmann’s ‘The Great Gatsby’ set to hit Aussie theatres in May

Baz Lurhmann’s ultra-hyped take on F. Scott Fitzgerald’s The Great Gatsby has set an official Aussie release date – May 30, 3013.

2013’s 3D adaptation of the famous Roaring Twenties narrative recreated the flourishing post-WWI New York on a Sydney set, and the Australian premiere of the Leonardo DiCaprio, Carey Mulligan, Joel Edgerton, Isla Fisher, Tobey Maguire and Jason Clarke-starring film will take place two weeks after the film’s initial Hollywood release.

“We're delighted to welcome Baz home in style,” said Joel Pearlman, Roadshow Films’ Managing Director. “By opening the film after the US, it will provide an opportunity for the stars of the film to attend an Australian Premiere befitting a film like Gatsby.”

Warner Bros. recently announced that the film will hit US theatres on May 10, moving the release date back from its initially planned Christmas Day delivery – a move critics say could harm The Great Gatsby’s Oscar chances.

The film brings the story of Nick Carraway – a war veteran who has moved to New York for work – back to all of its tragic decadence. The protagonist becomes fixated with neighbour Jay Gatsby’s mystique, and the aloof title character befriends Carraway, exposing him to unprecedented levels of opulence, criminal and overwrought emotional fraughts.
