With the new year at hand we look back at some of the absolute rubbish that was marketed as entertainment in 2009. This year was definitely an improvement on the last but we still had to endure the torture of watching millions of dollars wasted on mindless bores that shattered our faith in humanity.

Here is our pick of the ten atrocities committed to celluloid this year. If you were one of those poor individuals that paid to see them, our hopes and prayers are with you.

10. Ghosts of Girlfriends Past
Matthew McConaughey continues to destroy any credibility he had early on in his career with this self centered and vacuous romantic comedy. The lack of acting ability makes McConaughey’s character a smug and grating presence who is difficult to sympathize with on any level.

9. My Life in Ruins
Nia Vardalos once again attempts to rekindle the supposed magic of My Big Fat Greek Wedding with this unfortunate mess. It is perhaps the least funny comedy in recent memory as all involved seem incredibly embarrassed to be there. Hopefully this is the last time we’ll hear from Vardalos, although the bottom of the barrel is still lined by a Greek sequel.

8. Confessions of a Shopaholic
Whatever comedic talent Isla Fisher has is put to waste in this out of touch comedy given the current global financial situation. This poorly written excuse for entertainment becomes more infuriating as it progresses and reduces its central character to a driveling idiot.

7. Land of the Lost
Loud, dumb and worst of all unfunny. Will Ferrell needs to restore the faith of moviegoers after this turkey.

6. The Unborn
A horror film that relies on lowest common denominator thrills to evoke any sort of response. The premise is interesting enough if it wasn’t for laughably bad exposition in the second act. It rips off the greats without contributing a single original idea.

5. Bride Wars
The romantic comedy is in dire need of life support as the majority of the releases this year followed the same tired plot developments and lifeless characters. This was by no means the exception as it seemed to suck the life out the talented leads.

4. Couples Retreat
Great casting and not a bad idea are put to waste thanks to a horrible script that is so formulaic that even the actors have difficulty delivering the lines.

3. The Spirit
Creator of Sin City and 300, Frank Miller tries his hand at solo directing in this amateurishly slow bore. Samuel L Jackson can’t even liven up the events as the nifty visuals soon become headache inducing and nauseating in equal measures.

2. The Final Destination
A poor film even by Final Destination standards. There was no attempt to imbue this film with any hint of originality and every plot development is painfully obvious. Even in 3D this is truly the lowest point of the series.

1. Dragonball Evolution
The US adaptation of the much loved Manga series is the reason why cartoons should not be made into live action features. Everything about this rings fake and for a kids film it mires itself in unnecessary back-story that serve no purpose besides lulling the viewer into a deep coma.
